The SF Giants decided to sell at the trade deadline this year. As part of that decision, they moved on from long-time reliever Tyler Rogers by trading him to the New York Mets. While it is sad to see him go, it is possible he will not be gone for very long.
The Giants got a good deal for Rogers. They were able to land two of New York's top 15 prospects in the trade which could make for a fleecing depending on how those prospects turn out. It would not be the first time the Giants have fleeced the Mets in a trade. They also got a solid big league reliever in José Buttó.
SF Giants may not be without Tyler Rogers for very long
The Mets are getting a pitcher who has been one of the most consistent relievers in baseball since breaking into the league back in 2019. On the season, Rogers has a 1.80 ERA in 53 appearances. He probably should have been an All-Star, but he is now part of a revamped Mets bullpen.
However, Rogers is set to be a free agent following this season. The Mets had to give up a lot to get a rental who may very well be gone in a couple months, so they are clearly all in on trying to win this season.
This could create a scenario where Rogers returns to the Giants in 2026, though. With him being a free agent, it is certainly within the realm of possibility that the Giants could bring Rogers back.
He was with the Giants from 2019 until Wednesday and certainly is comfortable in the Bay Area. It may be easier for his family and life situation if he is able to return to San Francisco somehow.
Of course, nothing is a given. He may decide he wants to go somewhere else or may decide he will go to whoever the highest bidder is. Players factor in many different considerations when they are a free agent.
Yet, one cannot help but imagine how great it would be for the Giants if they brought him back. Not only will they have gotten some solid prospects in return for him, but they could get him back to bolster the bullpen when the team tries to reload in 2026.
It is not fun to see a player like Rogers go, but the Giants could really be the winners of this trade if they can find a way to bring him back.
