The SF Giants have made their first ahead of the trade deadline by trading right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets. The Giants are reportedly receiving prospects Blake Tidwell and Drew Gilbert, and major leaguer José Buttó, in exchange for Rogers.

This news comes via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic who reported the news on social media. This is now the second Rogers brother that president of baseball operations Buster Posey has traded after he traded Tyler's twin brother, Taylor, to the Cincinnatti Reds in the offseason.

Recent rumors had suggested the Giants were open to trading from their bullpen, although most recent rumors had applied to their closer Camilo Doval.

Rogers is an interesting option to trade since he has established himself as an incredibly reliable eighth-inning arm for the Giants over the course of his long tenure in San Francisco. On the season, Rogers has a 1.80 ERA in 53 appearances.

The submarine-throwing right-hander was snubbed from the All-Star Game this year which speaks to how he is often overlooked, even by some Giants fans. He has been such a reliable piece of the bullpen for so long and it seems many fans who get upset with him go crazy when he has one bad outing, often fueled by soft contact and weird seeing-eye ground balls, rather than the seven straight scoreless outings where he makes quick work of opponents.

With Rogers leaving, that means Randy Rodríguez probably slides into the eighth inning role which is not a bad replacement since he was an All-Star and has had a phenomenal season.

Tidwell and Gilbert are both top 15 prospects for the Mets, so it seems like the Giants got a pretty nice return in exchange for Rogers. Tidwell is a pitcher for New York's Triple-A affiliate who has a 4.10 ERA in 17 appearances on the season. Gilbert is an outfielder in Triple-A who is slashing .252/.354/.450 with 14 home runs and 53 runs batted in across two levels this season.

José Buttó has been a solid reliever for New York this season. He has a 3.64 ERA on the season in 47 innings pitched so the Giants could be getting another solid bullpen arm.

Rogers is set to be a free agent after this season, so the Mets are giving up quite a bit to get two months out of a reliever. That just shows how desperate they were for bullpen help and shows that the Giants got a lot for Rogers. We will see how it all shakes out, but this has a potential to be a fleece by Posey and the front office.

Rogers has been a very good Giant, but now he will go to a new team and try to help them make the playoffs. It will be weird seeing him in a non-Giants uniform since he has been with the team since 2019, but with how badly the Giants have been playing it makes sense for them to sell some pieces.
