SF Giants get underwhelming return in Camilo Doval trade with Yankees

They should have gotten more.

The SF Giants made a trade right at the buzzer by sending closer Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees in exchange for four players. With how much the Giants got for Tyler Rogers, the return for Doval is a bit underwhelming.

In return for Doval, the Giants got right-handed pitcher Trystan Vierling, the No. 19 prospect in New York's system, catcher Jesus Rodriguez, their No. 25 prospect, third baseman Parks Harber, and 17-year-old pitcher Carlos De La Rosa.

SF Giants get underwhelming return for Camilo Doval

One never knows how prospects will turn out, but after the Giants got a nice return of two top-15 prospects by trading Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets, there was an expectation that trading Doval would net an even larger return.

Yet, San Francisco only got one top-20 prospect from the Yankees. Coming into the season, the Mets were seen to have a superior farm system to the Yankees so it is not as if a No. 19 Yankees prospect is the equivalent of a No. 10 Mets prospect.

It was no surprise to see Doval get traded. It seemed like the next logical move after moving on from Rogers and there were many reports about teams that were interested in Doval.

However, one cannot help but feel like Buster Posey and the front office may have reached on this one. Even though the season feels lost right now, Doval was under team control for a few more years and had seemingly recaptured the All-Star form he had back in 2023.

There was a lot of talk in the offseason about how Doval could end up being traded, but Posey shut that talk down. He truly believed Doval could recapture his past form which is exactly what he did.

While the Giants would have loved to keep Doval in a perfect world, the team has performed so poorly that selling off some assets felt inevitable and necessary. Still, if the deal was not completely right the Giants should not have felt the need to pull the trigger since Doval was not going to be a free agent after the season.

We will see how these young players from New York turn out, but for right now it feels like the Giants got an underwhelming return.
