The SF Giants have a new, unofficial team mascot. It's a voodoo doll, apparently brought to the clubhouse by shortstop Willy Adames. The doll is said to be a sort of good luck charm for the team. The team has played better over the past two weeks, as they've pulled within four games of the Mets for the NL's final Wild Card spot.
The doll, a replica of Jobu from the movie Major League, is reminiscent of another Giants good luck charm.
New SF Giants good luck charm calls to mind another good luck charm from 2010
In 2010, around the same time in the season, Aubrey Huff and the Giants got on a hot streak, which may or may not have been fueled by a rally thong.
On August 30th, 2010, the Giants were 72-60. At the time, they were trailing the Phillies by 1.5 games for the NL Wild Card and trailing the Padres by 5 games in the NL West.
That was the day Huff began wearing a red, rhinestone-laden thong around the clubhouse, according to NBC Sports. Of course, this was back in the day when Huff was doing normal stuff like that before he completely lost his mind.
San Francisco went 20-10 the rest of the way, catching the Padres to win the NL West. Then, they went on to win the World Series, their first title in 56 years and the first since moving to San Francisco.
Could the magic be happening again in 2025?
This year's Giants started much further back than the club did in 2010. When the doll arrived in the Giants' clubhouse, the team was 61-68, on a four-game losing streak. They were 7.5 games behind the Mets for the third NL Wild Card spot, and also trailed the Reds, Cardinals and Diamondbacks.
Since then, they've gone a remarkable 11-2. Now 72-70, they still trail the Mets, but they've cut the gap nearly in half. If they stay hot, it's only a matter of time before they catch up.
If San Francisco is able to successfully surge into the postseason, the doll will be the next legendary good luck charm in franchise history.
