It is hard to explain the recent SF Giants hot streak after how bad the team looked over much of the summer. Some recent reporting suggests that dark magic and a voodoo doll may be playing some sort of role in the team’s success.
This comes via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle who reported that a voodoo doll has its own locker in the Giants clubhouse. Apparently it is a Jobu doll and is a replica of a doll from the movie Major League that shortstop Willy Adames received. Perhaps Adames possesses some sort of mystical powers that have brought about this win streak with him acting as a conduit for dark forces.
Or maybe the team is just playing better.
Voodoo magic may be behind recent SF Giants hot streak
We have already taken a look at how a bizarre ritual has potentially played a role in helping the Giants get back on track, but maybe this dark magic with shades of the occult is also helping the team out.
Baseball players are a very superstitious lot so if there is any sort of belief that this doll had contributed to the team’s recent play then it is surely going to continue having its own locker. The Giants have won 11 of 12 games since the doll’s arrival so if the Giants do continue this run and make the playoffs Jobu could join the ranks of the rally thong or Hunter Pence speeches in terms of strange things that helped the team win.
Of course, in reality the team has just played cleaner baseball as of late and their offense has been on fire. They have set and are continuing to improve upon a San Francisco era record for most consecutive games with a home run hit. Two of their most important players, Willy Adames and Rafael Devers, have been absolutely on fire and the team is also getting key contributions from young players like Drew Gilbert who is also helping the team with his energy and goofiness.
Baseball can be a difficult game to figure out sometimes. It is not always clear why a team gets hot when they do or why things go wrong. That’s the beauty of the game though and the beauty of a 162-game season. There are so many ebbs and flows that as long as you stay somewhat in the race you still have a chance.
The team may have done too much damage to their chances in the summer to truly beat the odds and snag a spot in the playoffs. Yet, the fact that they are even playing meaningful baseball right now is a pleasant surprise and reflects well on manager Bob Melvin after he seemed to be on the hot seat.
We will see how the rest of this season goes, but the Jobu voodoo doll has been working so far and if the Giants can really do something improbable the rest of the season you know Jobu will have its own cable car in the World Series parade. Maybe it will even be choking Drew Gilbert for good measure.
