What the heck is this team? It is only natural to ask that about the SF Giants after their recent hot streak and the fact that they just set a San Francisco-era record for the most consecutive games with a home run.
Matt Chapman's two homers last night against Colorado extended the home run streak to 17 games which is the most consecutive games the team has homered in since moving to San Francisco. Some of us are old enough to remember when this Giants team was setting franchise-worst marks just a few weeks ago.
This turn-around begs the question: what the heck is this team?
SF Giants set franchise home run record as hot streak continues
On paper, we always knew that this team was far better than the product out on the field for much of the summer. The Rafael Devers acquisition was supposed to take the offense to the next level, but instead the lineup cratered and the bats went cold.
Now, as it seems like basically the whole team is heating up at the plate, we are finally getting to see the future that was envisioned when president of baseball operations Buster Posey pulled the trigger on that trade.
This team has not made a ton of sense this year. They started the season off hot and even though the offense struggled at times, they were still right there in the race for the NL West in the middle of June. Then, after the Devers trade the team seemingly fell off a cliff for a few months and now, seemingly out of nowhere, they are playing their best baseball of the season.
The MLB season is long so there are naturally going to be some peaks and valleys, but those peaks and valleys have been especially pronounced this season as the team has gone from one extreme to the other with their play.
They have now inserted themselves back into the playoff conversation which is remarkable since just a few weeks ago the chatter surrounding the team was whether manager Bob Melvin would keep his job.
The Giants will need to stay hot and hope they get some help from other teams if they want to snag the final NL Wild Card spot, but if we have learned anything from this season it is that things are likely not going to follow some linear path as this season concludes. That just would not vibe with the roller coaster ride that has been the 2025 Giants.
