A month into the Rafael Devers era in San Francisco, there were already fans and analysts speculating that the SF Giants had made a mistake in trading for the superstar slugger. Lately, Devers has been putting those critics to bed, and his latest four-hit night gave fans a glimpse of the future they envisioned.
Rafael Devers gave SF Giants fans a glimpse of the future they envisioned in Wednesday's win
Yes, Devers has not been the player he was in Boston since arriving in San Francisco. His first month with the team was tumultuous. It does not help that his arrival in the bay coincided with the Giants' season taking a downward spiral.
In his first 38 games with the Giants, Devers slashed .218/.323/.359 with a .683 OPS. He hit just four home runs and drove in only 15 in the first month-and-a-half with the team.
Since August 2nd, however, Devers has been back to playing like a superstar. In his past 23 games, Devers has hit eight home runs and driven in 16 runs. He's slashing .277/.388/.602, good for a .990 OPS.
His latest feat was a four-for-four night against the Cubs, which saw Devers crush two home runs, and knock in five runs. He led the Giants to one of their best wins of the season and was the big reason why.
It might be that Devers needed time to adjust to his new team, and it might be that he was in a slump at the wrong time. But for whatever reason, Devers was not himself when he first arrived in San Francisco.
Now, he's back to the slugger he was in Boston. Giants fans are getting a taste of what prime Devers looks like, and it is awe-inspiring. With Devers locked up for eight more years after 2025, there is no question the Giants made the right call to trade for the power-hitting DH.
Devers' ability to hit for power is among the best in baseball, and he'll be able to provide value to the San Francisco lineup for years to come. His star power will also continue to bring fans to the ballpark, and bring merchandise revenue to the franchise. After a slow start, it is starting to look like the Giants made the right call in trading for Devers.
