Former SF Giants pitcher Jordan Hicks has only thrown 13 innings for the Boston Red Sox. That said, Red Sox fans have already seen enough.

Hicks was included in the trade to acquire Rafael Devers. Hicks was shipped to Boston along with James Tibbs III, Kyle Harrison, and Jose Bello. Tibbs III has been traded twice this year. The second trade brought home back to the West Coast in a deal that sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In fairness, the Red Sox have been the better team since the trade. They currently sit in second place in the AL East with a 67-56 record. On the other hand, the Giants have struggled badly, falling to fourth place in the NL West with a 59-63 record.

Boston might be playing better right now, but they are likely not better off by moving Devers. Hitters like that do not grow on trees.

The Giants included Jordan Hicks in the Devers trade as a way to offset some of the money they were assuming. He is in the second year of a four-year, $44 million pact. The Giants tried to convert Hicks into a starter, but they shifted him to the bullpen right before the trade. He has been a reliever for much of his seven-year career.

However, the 28-year-old pitcher has been more fine than good out of the bullpen. Paying $11 million annually for that type of role is just not a good value, and there was always risk when the Giants completed that signing.

Hicks' career with the Red Sox has not gone as planned so far. He has pitched to a 6.23 ERA with 11 strikeouts and eight walks in 13 innings of work. Despite throwing a fastball that can reach triple digits with ease, he does not miss a lot of bats.

If you search Hicks' name on social media, the comments are not all that pleasant. While the Giants have struggled since acquiring Rafael Devers, I think they did well to move Hicks. It should be noted that the Giants' struggles extend well beyond Devers, and his bat has been fine. On the other hand, Red Sox fans seem ready to move on from Hicks after just 14 outings.
