After missing out on free agents at the top of the market in recent offseasons, the San Francisco Giants quietly pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox. In a move that will disrupt Major League Baseball at its core, the Giants are acquiring All-Star Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox for Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs, and Jose Bello.
Devers famously had his conflicts with Boston this year after they moved him off of third base. After a slump to open the season, Devers quickly returned to top offensive form. Through his first 330 plate appearances, Devers has 15 home runs to go along with 57 RBI.

Giants just made a trade for Rafael Devers that changes everything
The Giants' move for Devers comes during a season where the veteran slugger was at odds with Boston's front office since Spring Training, when he was forced to move off third base after the Red Sox signing of Alex Bregman. The relationship was never mended, leading to the Giants' ability to strike big.
Credit to the Giants, on the night that they are playing their biggest rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers, on Sunday Night Baseball, they fired the first shot of the MLB Trade Deadline season. Entering play on Sunday, the Giants were only one game behind the Dodgers for first place in the National League West. The move for Devers certainly may have pushed the needle to their side of the pendulum.
It will be curious to see how the Dodgers respond. Reports up to this point indicate that the Dodgers are focusing on stabilizing their pitching rotation, which has been decimated by injuries. However, any move they make may not have the same impact that Devers' arrival will have for the Giants.
All of that said, the Giants certainly had to pay up to bring Devers into the fold. Jordan Hicks is a flamethrower that looked pretty good in his first season starting in 2024 before regressing this season while Kyle Harrison and James Tibbs are two of San Francisco's most talented young players.
Oh, and the Giants are now on the hook for the remaining $250 million owed to Devers through 2033. Devers finally gives San Francisco the marquee bat that they have coveted for multiple years now. We'll know soon enough if Devers was worth giving up so much for.
