SF Giants unable to bring back rookie catcher Zach Morgan before season finale

The SF Giants conveyed a plan to bring back Zach Morgan before the end of the season. However, the final weekend concluded without the rookie catcher being recalled.

It was a frustrating turn of events for many Giants fans. Morgan is local to Northern California, so he already has a base of friends and family who would have been excited to see him get into a game.

Of course, the Giants had plenty of opportunities to do so. When they ran out of catching in August, Morgan was called up for the first time. That proved to be a brief stint, as he was optioned back to Triple-A one day later to make room for Andrew Knizner.

When the rosters expanded in September, Morgan was once again promoted as the emergency catcher. However, the need for an emergency catcher only comes when, you guessed it, in an emergency. That emergency never came.

Morgan spent about 10 days on the active roster in 2026 and was not able to get into a game. With the Giants not going anywhere, it is hard to believe they could not find a spot. This is one area where Tony Vitello will need to show improvement next season. Part of being a manager is keeping the roster engaged, and one way to do that is by setting clear roles. On more than one occasion, a player would go days without seeing any at-bats. It is hard to stay ready when he does not know when his next game might be.

The Giants had opportunities to bring Morgan back. This is especially true in the final weekend of the year, when it is relatively easy to send a player to the injured list without risk or consequence. At that point, every player has a scrape, cut, or general fatigue that would put them on the injured list.

For example, Landen Roupp made his final appearance of the season on September 14. The Giants communicated in the final week that he had been shut down for the year. Could they not use this as an opportunity to place him on the injured list and add Morgan? I find that hard to believe.

Now, Morgan will likely be part of that roster crunch in the offseason. They have 17 players on the 60-day injured list who will need to be brought back, whether that is activating them or placing them on waivers. They also have five catchers listed on the 40-man roster. There is going to be a lot of activity at the start of the offseason. It is just a shame that they could not find a way to get Morgan into a game.
