3 ex-Giants catchers SF can sign after brutal Daniel Susac injury news

The SF Giants got some tough news on rookie catcher Daniel Susac. He had to leave Sunday’s game due to a knee injury and it was revealed on Monday that he actually had a fracture in his knee which seems likely to end his season.

It’s a shame because Susac was having a very solid year. He started off red-hot and played well enough that the Giants were comfortable trading away their two-time Gold Glove winner Patrick Bailey. 

Susac went cold for a while at the plate but had come on recently and his defense was a pleasant surprise as he graded out as one of the best pitch-framers in baseball, displayed his cannon of an arm with regularity, and was also gaining the trust of the pitching staff.

He’s still the favorite to be the team’s starting catcher next season, whenever that is, but now the Giants need to figure out their catcher situation the rest of this year.

Drew Cavanaugh figures to get the bulk of the catching duties the rest of this year and he has looked pretty solid so far both at the plate and behind the dish. The Giants called up Zach Morgan as an emergency option but word is they want a more experienced backup. 

Well, it just so happens that there are some old friends, and one frenemy, who are available to be signed right now. Let’s take a look at the three ex-Giants catchers who the team could scoop up after the Susac injury.

3 emergency catcher options who are familiar to Giants fans

Andrew Knizner 

Perhaps the most obvious option is Andrew Knizner who was the team’s backup catcher for a good chunk of last season. He hit .221/.299/.299 with one home run and five runs batted in last year and just opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox recently.

He’s been with several different teams this season but has yet to appear in the big leagues so he seems like a safe depth option to have so the Giants can give Cavanaugh a break every now and then.

Chadwick Tromp

While Tromp was doing some good things for the Atlanta Braves earlier this season, a team that seemingly is addicted to collecting former Giants, he recently elected free agency after he was put on waivers by the Baltimore Orioles.

He made his big league debut with the Giants back in 2020 and played a bit in 2021 as well. He won’t give the Giants much as he’s hit .208/.215/.344 in his career but he’s at least been a round the block.

Tom Murphy

This is admittedly the least likely reunion of the bunch given the way Murphy’s time with San Francisco went. He was given a two-year, $8.25 million deal ahead of the 2024 season to be the backup catcher. He played in 13 games for San Francisco and then injured his knee and was done for the year.

He tried to come back in 2025 but hurt his back in spring training and was shut down again. He then accused the team of medical malpractice and called his tenure with the team a “nightmare.”

It’s doubtful he wants to come back to the Giants but desperate times may call for desperate measures as he remains unsigned after the Giants cut him loose in the offseason.

The Giants are just trying to survive the rest of this season so don’t be surprised if they reunite with one of these guys so they at least have enough warm bodies to make it through the rest of this disappointing season.
