SF Giants insider expects rookie catcher to return before the end of the season

Zach Morgan has had two separate stints in the majors, but has not yet recorded an appearance in a game. However, Tony Vitello hinted to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area that the plan is to bring Morgan back before the end of the year.

Pavloivc and co-host Cole Kuiper on the Giants Talk Podcast discussed the number of players who have appeared in a game for the Giants in 2026. Currently, the Giants have tied a franchise record with 66 players used.

With less than two weeks to go, Pavlovic expects them to surpass that mark and set a new record. He mentioned Duncan Davitt, Marcelo Mayer, and Morgan as players who should be up before the end of the year.

For Morgan, it would be a cool story for the Northern California native. He grew up in Stockton, California, and attended Fresno State University before being selected in the seventh round of the 2022 draft by San Francisco.

For much of his pro career, Morgan has served as a mutli-positional depth option for the organization. Oftentimes, he would go to whichever affiliate needed him most. He has experience at a few positions, including catcher.

In August, the Giants ran out of catching depth and promoted Morgan in an emergency. After one game, he was sent back down to make room for veteran backstop Andrew Knizner.

When the rosters expanded in September, Morgan was recalled but sat on the bench before being sent back down. He has accrued about 10 days of service time, but has not made his way into a game yet.

That is expected to change. In the latest podcast episode, Tony Vitello told Alex Pavlovic that "we're well aware" of the Morgan situation, hinting that the plan is to fix it.

Morgan has worked up and down the organization. He even had a stint with the Scottsdale Scorpions in 2023. He has spent the 2026 season in the upper minors, most notably appearing in 37 games for the Sacramento River Cats. Morgan has tallied a .625 OPS with one home run and 20 RBI in 137 plate appearances during that time.

The Giants have a roster crunch looming due to carrying so many players on the 60-day injured list. At some point soon, those players will need to be added back to the 40-man roster or placed on waivers. This will lead to a lot of changes to the roster.
