SF Giants recall recently-claimed infielder in roster move ahead of Cardinals game

The SF Giants made a roster move ahead of the second game of the series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The team recalled recently claimed infielder Brett Harris from Triple-A, per the team's transaction log.

In a corresponding move, multi-positional catcher Zach Morgan was sent back down to Triple-A. The Giants purchased his contract in August, when they essentially ran out of catching depth. He was up for one game during that brief stint before being sent back down to make room for veteran backstop Andrew Knizner.

When rosters expanded, the Giants recalled Morgan. Despite being on the roster for a week, he still has not appeared in a game for San Francisco. It would be a cool moment if the Northern California native could get into at least one game before the end of the year.

The Giants have a major roster crunch coming up in the offseason. This is due to the sheer number of players they have on the 60-day injured list. At some point soon, the Giants will need to make a decision on those players, whether that is activating them from the injured list or placing them on waivers. There is a good chance that Morgan could be part of that roster crunch, too.

Recently-acquired SF Giants infielder will get a chance to audition before the end of the year

The Giants claimed Brett Harris off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. He was originally a seventh-round pick by the A's out of Gonzaga University. In parts of four minor league seasons, Harris has posted a 283/.381/.451 line with an 11.5 percent walk rate, 17.2 percent strikeout rate, and .168 ISO. This includes a healthy .828 OPS in parts of four seasons in Triple-A. His profile leans hit-over-power.

The right-handed bat has appeared in each of the past three seasons, most notably with the A's. He also appeared briefly with the Red Sox earlier this season. Overall, Harris has struggled to a .593 OPS in 216 career plate appearances.

Presumably, the Giants are giving him a chance to see if he can earn an audition for next season. Harris will be out of minor league option years after this season, so if he does not perform, then he will likely be part of that roster crunch.
