SF Giants Rumors: MLB insider gives sliver of hope team can trade its worst contracts

One of the big storylines surrounding the SF Giants ahead of the MLB trade deadline on August 3 is whether they will be able to offload any of their big contracts. While it will be hard to do, one MLB insider at least gave a sliver of hope it could happen.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently reported that the Giants have received some calls from teams interested in Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Rafael Devers. Now, that’s not much to go off but it least suggests there might be some interest from teams around the league.

Those calls may have just consisted of the Atlanta Braves calling Buster Posey and saying, “Hey, Buster, would you be willing to give us Adames and pay the rest of his salary so we actually have a real shortstop and can maybe beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a playoff series?” 

It’s clear that if the Giants are going to get rid of any of these guys they’ll have to eat some money to make it happen. Chapman is owed over $100 million after this season, Adames is going to make over $30 million per year until 2031, and with deferred money Devers is going to be paid until the 2040s.

These contracts are what the analytics community refer to as “bad.” The hope was the Giants would at least get a few more prime years out of these guys and then they’d inevitably start to decline, but it seems all three are declining already.

All three contracts will be hard to move for the Giants

Chapman has the most value of the three just because of what he can do defensively so maybe there’s a world in which a team wants him. Still, he has a no-trade clause so he can decide where he goes, if he’s even willing to leave at all.

Adames has had a bad season offensively and defensively and fans have grown tired of his mental errors and happy-go-lucky attitude as the team has had an awful season. He will be the hardest of the bunch to trade since he too has a no-trade clause.

Devers has had the best year of the trio and is still a legitimate power threat, but his contract is still so onerous that it’s tough to see a team willing to take it on.

The Giants are limping into the trade deadline and if things get even worse these next few weeks maybe the Giants will just decide to blow it up and move these guys at any cost. It won’t be easy at all but at least Heyman has provided the tiniest shred of hope it could happen.
