SF Giants may be forced to offload big contracts in the most painful way possible

The SF Giants have a number of big contracts that they at least seem open to trading. Ever since reporting came out that the Giants were entertaining trading Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers it was clear they’d have to eat money to make a deal happen, but they might have to do even more than that.

A recent MLB Trade Rumors article by Charlie Wright about how scouts from other teams are taking a look at Heliot Ramos and Casey Schmitt makes the point that the Giants might have to include one of those players as well in order to trade off one of their big-contract players.

Wright writes: “The price for Ramos or Schmitt might include taking on one of the Giants’ underwater contracts.” To be clear, this is just speculation and there’s no reporting out there right now that the Giants are actually thinking about doing that but if the Giants are desperate to get rid of Chapman or Adames that may be the only way to get a deal done.

For instance, the New York Yankees are a team that could use some help in the outfield especially with Aaron Judge’s status unclear. Ramos would make a ton of sense for them but maybe the Giants could try to get them to take Chapman in that deal as well. The Yankees could use an upgrade at third base as well so he would fill a need.

Still, it would just be really hard to make it work with how much money Chapman is owed and the fact that he has a no-trade clause in his contract. Plus he’s injured right now which could complicate things even though he’s expected to be back fairly soon.

Giants will probably have to keep their bad contracts

The same goes for their other bad contracts. Willy Adames is owed so much money and has been so bad that it’s tough to see anyone taking him on. Could Casey Schmitt sweeten the deal a bit? Maybe, but probably not enough to stomach Adames’ deal.

At this point Devers is probably just worth hanging onto. He’s certainly streaky but when he gets hot he can carry a lineup and it also doesn’t hurt that basically no team would be willing to touch his contract.

If the Giants were really desperate to get rid of these guys they could probably find a way, but they aren’t at that point yet so they will probably stay put and won’t be packaged with guys like Schmitt or Ramos.

It would be painful having to give up a solid younger player just so they could get rid of an underperforming veteran so maybe it's for the best that it's an unlikely outcome.
