Aaron Judge health update puts SF Giants in a great position ahead of trade deadline

When New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge went on the IL due to a rib fracture earlier in the season, it was obvious right away that the injury could have implications for the SF Giants. After the latest update on Judge that’s even more true.

Judge has yet to resume baseball activities even though he is healing from the injury. Still, the optimistic timetable was that Judge would return in August but now September is being thrown around a bit more so this injury could drag on a bit.

With all the uncertainty around Judge, the Yankees have to be thinking about getting some insurance in the next few weeks with the trade deadline looming which puts San Francisco in an advantageous position.

Giants have outfielders to sell at the deadline

The Giants have three outfielders who they are going to at least be open to hearing offers for ahead of the deadline. The biggest name is Jung Hoo Lee and it’s unclear if the Giants view him as untouchable or expendable ahead of the deadline.

He is having his best career season but given how streaky he can be there’s an argument to be made for the Giants to sell high on him especially since he’s still owed quite a bit of money.

The Yankees saw him have an incredible series in New York last year so they know what he is capable of, but he’s a fan-favorite in San Francisco so they won’t get him for nothing.

Heliot Ramos has spent a lot of time on the IL this year but since he’s returned he’s looked like his usual self at the plate. On the season he’s hitting .277/.310/.460 with eight home runs and 29 runs batted in.

We all know the liability he is in the outfield, but for a Yankees team that has been struggling offensively they’d certainly like to add a guy with some power to the lineup even if he’s not a Gold Glove defender.

The discount option for New York would be Harrison Bader. He’s played for the Yankees before and he’s a New York native so the fit would make sense. He’s struggled with injury and has had a bad year offensively for San Francisco, hitting .170/.198/.358, but when he got traded to the Philadelphia Phillies last year he hit great so maybe a change of scenery and finally getting healthy will do wonders for him.

The main point is that if the Yankees are looking for outfielders to try to fill part of the void left by Judge’s absence the Giants have options. New York wouldn’t completely sell the farm for any of those three guys but the Giants could certainly get a good haul especially if the Yankees get nervous about Judge’s status for the rest of the season.
