The SF Giants published their non-roster list on Friday with pitchers and catchers reporting next week. A pair of top prospects in Bryce Eldridge and Carson Whisenhunt are among the players who will be in camp.
SF Giants publish non-roster invitee list, headlined by a pair of top prospects
Following the Taylor Rogers trade, Erik Miller is the only left-handed reliever on the 40-man roster. The Giants will have a pretty open competition for that second lefty out of the bullpen as they invited eight left-handed picthers to camp. Perhaps, Joye Lucchesi has the inside track for that role if he performs.
It should be noted that Lou Trivino is not listed yet. The Giants reportedly agreed to a minor league deal with a camp invite for the veteran reliever on Thursday. That deal is not finalized just yet but he is expected to be with the Giants once it is.
We will expand on this in the coming days but the Giants' non-roster invite list does not include any outfielders and only a handful of infielders led by Eldridge. The Giants have seven outfielders listed on the 40-man with Marco Luciano likely joining that group this spring.
Eldridge and Whisenhunt will be among the prospects to monitor in camp. Eldridge is coming off of an excellent 2024 campaign that saw him begin the year in Low-A while he breezed through several levels to finish the season in Triple-A.
The left-handed bat slashed .293/.348/.512 with 23 home runs and 92 RBI in 519 plate appearances across four levels in 2024. He also posted an .860 OPS with two home runs and six RBI in a brief showing during the Arizona Fall League.
Whisenhunt quietly had a nice season in Triple-A. He pitched to a 5.17 ERA, 4.63 FIP, 1.58 WHIP, 11.6 K/9, and a 2.5 SO/W rate in 27 starts with the Sacramento River Cats. The southpaw pitcher struggled badly on the road in ballparks that are at a significantly higher elevation than nearly every major league stadium with the exception of Coors Field.
The 24-year-old pitcher tallied a 2.34 ERA in 14 starts at home. Sacramento's home ballpark, Sutter Health Park, is one of the fairer fields in the Pacific Coast League.
Whisenhunt did manage to cross the 100-inning threshold as well, which is an important step for him in terms of building arm-strength. Plus, he did show more confidence in his slider in 2024 after relying primarily on a sinker-changeup in 2023. In particular, the changeup grades out as an above-average pitch with late fading action that he tunnels well with his fastball.
