The SF Giants have made a trade with the Cincinnati Reds. San Francisco is trading left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers to the Reds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Braxton Roxby. This move, of course, separates Taylor from his twin Tyler.

SF Giants trade Taylor Rogers to the Reds

The move does not come as a huge shock especially when one considers the Giants put Taylor Rogers on waivers late last season hoping a team would claim him. No team did, but given the fact that the Giants were set to pay Rogers $12 million in 2025 it makes sense that the Giants would try to move on from him.

Rogers was not bad for the Giants by any means. The team signed him to a three-year contract prior to the 2023 season and his stats were respectable on the whole after a rough start to his Giants career that led to a memorable moment when he threw his glove into a trash can. His ERA in 2023 was 3.83 in 51 and 2/3 innings which was not bad considering his ERA was at 7.00 after the month of April.

He followed that up with a solid 2024, posting a 2.40 ERA in 60 innings pitched. However, it was clear that manager Bob Melvin did not go with Rogers in high leverage spots and seemed to use him a lot as a reliever earlier in games. The Giants were expecting Rogers to be an elite late-innings reliever when they signed him, so the fact that he was rarely used in the eighth or ninth innings made it unjustifiable for the Giants to keep him for $12 million.

The Giants are getting Braxton Roxby in return, a 25-year-old right-handed reliever who has put up middling numbers in the minor leagues with a career ERA of 4.30 across four minor league seasons.

This really seems like a move designed to clear up some space money-wise perhaps with an eye on making another move as Giants beat reporter Alex Pavlovic has speculated.

We must acknowledge that this trade does break up the Rogers twins which is most unfortunate. It is pretty cool that Tyler and Taylor were able to play on the same team for two years though and were able to make a lifelong dream come true. It's unfortunate it could not last longer, but this move is probably in the best interests of the team going forward so they can potentially make an upgrade to their offense in free agency.
