The Giants had not dealt with many injuries before this week. Bailey now joins Matt Chapman on the injured list.

The Bailey injury means that the Giants will have a couple of newcomers behind the plate in Porter and Andrew Knizner. Porter joined the Giants on a minor league deal in the offseason and worked as one of the two catchers with the Sacramento River Cats this season.

On the other hand, the Giants just added Knizner on a minor league pact in May. He was added to the major league roster last week, when the Giants made a flurry of moves.

While Bailey struggled with the bat, he remains an elite defensive catcher. That type of value will be difficult to replace, but the combination of Knizner and Porter should give the lineup marginally more offense.

Porter had a .669 OPS with two home runs and 13 RBI in 161 plate appearances with Sacramento this season. Across seven minor league seasons, he has been much better at the plate with an .841 OPS, including a .765 OPS in parts of four seasons at Triple-A.

The 29-year-old backstop has a bit of experience in the majors, recording six hits in 31 at-bats with the Kansas City Royals in 2023.

To make room on the roster for Porter, Osleivis Basabe was designated for assignment. The Giants swung a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays to acquire him right before spring training.

Basabe is a versatile bench bat with excellent contact skills and speed, but limited power upside. He slumped to a .639 OPS in 198 plate appearances with the River Cats. Similar to Porter, Basabe's track record in the minors is much better than his 2025 production. Overall, he has recorded a .766 OPS in seven minor league seasons.

The 24-year-old infielder struggled during his stint with the Rays in 2023. He will now be on the waiver wire, where any team can claim or bypass the waiver order by making a trade.
