The 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) is over, with Team Venezuela defeating Team USA in the finals by a score of 3-2. A pair of SF Giants players in Luis Arráez and José Buttó played a role in leading their country to victory.

The WBC has grown in popularity since its inception in 2006. The energy and commitment that the players make for their country is palpable. There are certainly things that baseball needs to fix with its game, but the WBC seems to hit on all cylinders.

Arráez and Buttó will now return to Giants camp to get ready for the regular season. They will have bragging rights over Logan Webb, who played a key role in leading Team USA to the finals.

If you can believe it, Opening Day is one week away. Spring training has been underway for about a month now. The environment in Arizona is typically relaxed, but the competitiveness turns up a notch as the regular seasons draws closer.

The Giants will finish up in the Cactus League by Sunday. They will then return home for a trio of exhbition games, including a game against the Sacramento River Cats.

Arráez and Buttó will shift gears from the WBC to helping the Giants in 2026. Arráez joined the Giants on a one-year deal, whereas Buttó is looking to carve out a role in the bullpen. While the regular season nears, the bullpen hierarchy is seemingly still up for grabs. Ryan Walker returning to the closer role to start the year is arguably the only role that has been determined. That said, the Giants have not decided on that front yet.

Arráez had an unforgettable game earlier in the tournament, where he blasted two home runs in a convincing 11-3 win over Israel. Overall, he slashed .308/.367/.692 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 26 at-bats. He finished in second place in RBI, behind only Fernando Tatis Jr. (Dominican Republic) and Bo Gyeong Moon (South Korea), both of whom finished with 11 RBI.

On the other hand, Buttó tallied 5.2 scoreless frames with one strikeout and zero walks. This is a very cool honor for Arráez and Buttó, as well as for Team Venezuela.
