SF Giants ace Logan Webb took the ball for Team USA on Friday night as it faced Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Webb was masterful as he pitched 4 and 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five batters while issuing one walk and allowing five hits.
The performance was good enough that it got play-by-play announcer Joe Davis, a man who regularly does play-by-play for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the regular season, to say that he thinks the Giants are going to be good this season.
Logan Webb's great performance earned praise from Dodgers announcer
Towards the end of Webb's start, Davis said, "Giants are going to be good this year," before listing some of the offseason additions the Giants made like Luis Arraez and Harrison Bader. Davis usually tries to play it pretty straight when he calls games for FOX, so maybe he was just trying to seem impartial and unbiased.
Color commentator John Smoltz chimed in and provided a dose of reality, saying that any National League West teams that are not the Dodgers are simply trying to find a way to squeak into the playoffs as a Wild Card team.
Maybe both things can be true. Maybe this is the year the Giants break out of their rut of mediocrity and win close to 90 games. Perhaps that is enough to get them into the playoffs as a Wild Card team.
The Giants have not made the playoffs since 2021 and seeing Webb pitch so well on a big stage is a reminder of how frustrating it is that he has only made it to the playoffs once in his career.
He had a solid start in Team USA's first game of the event against Team Brazil. He allowed a home run to the first batter he faced but shut them down after that.
There were some fears about how participating in the WBC might affect Webb, but it seems to have gone as well as possible. He stayed healthy and pitched great which is basically all one could have asked for.
It will be interesting to see if Team USA can win it all this time around. Former Giant Tyler Rogers just joined the team as a reserve so maybe he can have a big moment on a national stage as well.
Now the hope is that Webb can make some big starts yet again in October if the Giants can finally make it back to the playoffs.
