The SF Giants have begun the search for a new manager, but who will take over? Robert Murray of FanSided speculated that former backstop Nick Hundley could be a fit.

MLB insider speculates that former SF Giants catcher could take over as manager

On Wednesday, Murray joined co-host Adam Weinrib on the Baseball Insiders Podcast to discuss the managerial openings.

Murray believes that the Giants' managerial opening is an appealing one because a long-term core is in place. He went on to share that the industry views Buster Posey as a good leader and that there should be no shortage of interested suitors.

Along with Hundley, some other candidates include Skip Schumaker and Mark DeRosa. For a moment, it was looking like Bruce Bochy could be an option, but Posey confirmed that the longtime manager is not a candidate.

There is a good chance Schumaker takes over for the Texas Rangers. He has served in their front office since last winter, and has been viewed as a replacement for Bochy as soon as he was hired.

On the other hand, DeRosa might appeal to the Atlanta Braves. That position became open when Brian Snitker announced his retirement.

According to Robert Murray, Nick Hundley seems like a fit for the Giants for a few reasons. Most notably, the veteran catcher knows Posey well from their playing days. Posey and Hundley were teammates with the Giants for two seasons.

Hundley was the Willie Mac Award winner in 2017, and returned last weekend for the pregame ceremony to recognize Willy Adames as the 2025 Willie Mac Award recipient.

Catchers tend to make great managers as well. Two of the Giants' past three managers played the position. Gabe Kapler was the lone exception. While Bob Melvin's tenure was disappointing, he does have a long history of managing.

On the other hand, Hundley has no coaching experience. His career came to an end after the 2019 season, and he immediately transitioned to a role in the operations department for MLB.

Over the past three seasons, he has worked as a special assistant to Rangers general manager Chris Young. Two seasons ago, Hundley was asked to interview for the Giants' opening, but he declined.
