The SF Giants announced on Monday that they fired their manager Bob Melvin. The veteran manager spent two seasons as the skipper of the club but now finds himself ousted after a second straight mediocre season.

The news was announced on social media:

Top 3 candidates to replace Bob Melvin as SF Giants manager

It seems that Melvin had an understanding that his fate was up in the air. Even though players on the Giants often had his back, the team endured brutal stretches during the 2025 season where they simply played inexcusable baseball. The fact that the team still missed out on the playoffs by just a few games leaves on wondering what could have been and reflects poorly on the coaching staff given the talent that was on the roster.

Now, the Giants must look ahead and find the right person to manage the club going forward. Let's take a look at the top three candidates to replace Melvin.

Bruce Bochy

Expect to hear a lot of talk connecting the Giants to Bruce Bochy in the coming days and weeks. Throughout this season, it seemed like the stars were aligning for a reunion with the man who was at the helm for all three of the team's World Series championships last decade.

After winning yet another World Series with the Texas Rangers back in 2023, the Rangers have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons and Bochy's contract is up. He is now essentially a free agent and there may be no better situation for him than to return to San Francisco and get to work with Buster Posey yet again.

One insider, Bob Nightengale of USA Today, has already mused that a reunion is a possibility so it is not as crazy as it may seem.

Skip Schumaker

Last month, Nightengale threw out Skip Schumaker as a potential replacement for Melvin if the Giants decided to move on from him. He did a good job as the manager of the Miami Marlins in 2023 as he led the team to a record of 84-78 but followed that up with a rough 2024 season of 62-100.

He is a younger option and would inherit a more talented roster than the one he had in Miami so he is another name that could be connected to San Francisco.

Mark Hallberg

After Posey was hired as the president of baseball operations last year, it did not seem like that much of a reach to assume that the next manager of the Giants would end up being first base coach Mark Hallberg.

Posey and Hallberg were teammates at Florida State University in college and Hallberg has been with the Giants for a long time now. He has been a coach since 2020, serving initially as a third base coach and currently as the team's first base coach.

If Posey wants more of an extension of himself in the dugout, do not be surprised if he hires Hallberg.

The Giants will surely be linked to lots of names in their managerial search, but these are three of the top candidates as the Giants look to replace Bob Melvin after letting him go.
