Stars are aligning for SF Giants to reunite with legendary former manager

More nostalgia, anyone?

With the SF Giants having a brutal free fall in the last few months, there have been a lot of questions about manager Bob Melvin's job security. With Bruce Bochy being in the last year of his contract with the Texas Rangers, the stars may be aligning for a reunion.

President of baseball operations Buster Posey will certainly be watching closely to see how the Giants perform the last month and a half of the season. If Melvin can get some decent play out of the club, his job will probably be safe but if the team continues the downward trajectory they have been on as of late then a change could be in order.

There are potential candidates out there who could make for an interesting replacement if Melvin is let go. Just recently, a former NL Manager of the Year was floated as a potential replacement.

The Giants would have to play very poorly the rest of the season for a change to be made. Melvin still has the support of players like Matt Chapman and other players on the team have also voiced their support even if it has gotten them in some hot water.

Yet, we have seen how hopeless the Giants have looked for much of their recent stretch. It would not be a huge shock if this team went into a total tailspin with little to play for coming down the stretch which could lead to Melvin being shown the door.

Turning to what is happening in Texas, the Rangers are struggling as well. The Rangers are 2-8 in their last ten games and are seven games back in the AL West and six games back in the AL Wild Card.

Like the Giants, they are fading further and further from the playoff picture.

Bochy is in the final year of his contract with Texas. At the age of 69 he has not suggested that he plans to retire. If Texas were to decide to go in a different direction and he became, in essence, a managerial free agent, would Posey be able to pass up the opportunity to reunite with his former manager?

The two did some pretty special things last decade as they were two of the key constants in the middle of all three of the team's World Series titles. Maybe they could try and run it back and give the fans an extra hit of nostalgia.

It would certainly be a move that gets a lot of Giants fans excited, but it would be fair to wonder if it is what is best for the team. After Bochy led Texas to a World Series title in 2023, the Rangers missed the playoffs in 2024 and are poised to do so again.

Plus, one knock on Melvin is that his lack of energy and old school style may be partly to blame for the team's lackluster, lifeless play in the second half. Bochy is a great manager who will be in the Hall of Fame, but energetic is not a word that would be used to describe him.

Still, it is too intriguing of a possibility to ignore and if Posey wants Bochy he might be able to get him with how things are going for the Giants and Rangers right now.
