The SF Giants have been going through it recently. There is plenty of blame to go around for the team's struggles, but the team is playing below the level of talent they have on the field which is why manager Bob Melvin should be on the hot seat.
When the Giants swung a trade for Rafael Devers back in June, the expectation was that the Giants were going to make the playoffs. They were already right there in the NL West standings and it stood to reason that adding a big bat like Devers was only going to help the team.
Bob Melvin needs to be on the hot seat for the SF Giants
That has not happened. The Giants have been one of the worst teams in all of baseball since that trade. They seemingly keep on finding a new low, with the most recent one coming on Sunday as they lost 8-0 at home to the Washington Nationals.
They are losing to teams they should be beating, so it should come as no surprise that they lose to teams that are superior to them like they did on Monday night against the San Diego Padres.
There is still the potential for the Giants to turn things around. They are within reach of a NL Wild Card spot. Yet, it just feels like things are already over for this team. The energy is not there and it just feels like this team lacks the belief necessary to make any sort of consistent run.
It would not be at all surprising if the team tailspins in the last month and a half of the season. If that happens and it starts to seem like the team is giving up, then Melvin may have to go.
Even though the Giants exercised Melvin's contract option for 2026, which gives the impression that he is not currently on the hot seat, president of baseball operations Buster Posey may have no other choice than to move on from the veteran manager. This team has the requisite talent to be a legitimate playoff team but they are playing uninspired baseball which leads one to believe they are not being inspired by their skipper.
Posey may be reluctant to make a change after publicly voicing his support for Melvin earlier this season and the fact that key leaders on the Giants have supported Melvin as well, but he should not be afraid to shake things up.
There are some interesting potential replacements for Melvin who would get the fanbase pumped up in the same way that Posey being named as president of baseball operations last year got many fans excited.
Posey has done his job getting the right players on the field, but Melvin has not done his job in getting the best out of them. He is a respected manager who has had a very good managerial career, but he may not be what this team needs right now which is why he should be on the hot seat.
