We knew that today was going to be a very busy day for the SF Giants. They had to trim their 40-man roster down to make room for all of the players who needed to be reinstated from the 60-day IL and they were busy.
The Giants shared that they made the following moves on social media:
The #SFGiants made the following roster moves today:
— SFGiants (@SFGiants) November 2, 2026
• RHP José Buttó claimed off waivers by Texas.
• RHP Duncan Davitt claimed off waivers by Cincinnati.
• IF Brett Harris and IF Shay Whitcomb claimed off waivers by Philadelphia.
• C Zach Morgan claimed off waivers by…
Reliever José Buttó was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers. Reliever Duncan Davitt was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds, infielders Brett Harris and Shay Whitcomb were claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies, catcher Zach Morgan was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles, relievers Seth Lonsway and Joel Kuhnel cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, and reliever Tristan Beck was released.
This comes after some moves they made in recent days by trading Nate Furman, outrighting Andrew Knizner, and the first wave of cuts they made last week.
However, the Giants are not done yet. As Justice delos Santos of the Mercury News pointed out on social media, this only brings San Francisco down to 41 so still one more player has to go. My guess is is will probably be Ryan Walker or Reiver Sanmartin but we shall see.
An important thing to keep in mind is that even though the 40-man roster. has been whittled down, more moves will have to be made if the Giants sign free agents during the offseason so just because players survived today's cuts does not mean they won't be put on waivers down the road at some point.
José Buttó getting put on waivers came as a surprise
The one move that took me a little by surprise was Buttó. He barely pitched at all last season because a blood clot was discovered in his throwing arm and he had to undergo multiple procedures to remove it. He's been a solid reliever in the past so I figured they would give him another crack at a shot in the bullpen in 2027 but with how bad the team was and how bad the bullpen was in particular perhaps no moves should come as a major surprise.
We will keep an eye on who that final roster cut is but the Giants have at least sorted out a very important piece of business at the start of the offseason. Now their attention should turn towards improving a roster that was simply not good enough as a whole in 2026.
