We knew coming into the offseason that the SF Giants would be busy clearing space on the 40-man roster since they have so many guys on the 60-day IL who will need to have room made for them. They have already been busy on that front with a first wave of roster cuts on Thursday which cleared five 40-man spots followed by catcher Andrew Knizner clearing waivers and being outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday which cleared another spot.

The Giants still have to clear more spots though, probably somewhere around 10 since they currently have 50 guys on the 40-man roster including the 60-day IL players. Some guys will get outrighted to Triple-A, some will get claimed on waivers, and others will elect free agency. That’s a lot of players who need to be cut so I’m going to take my best guess at which 10 players will be put on waivers.

Guessing the rest of the Giants players who will be cut from 40-man roster

Ryan Walker

Yeah, he’s gotta go. This move is probably long overdue as he has been given multiple chances to regain his form but simply hasn’t been able to do it. He will probably get claimed by another team like the Milwaukee Brewers and they’ll fix him instantly and turn him into an All-Star next season.

Tristan Beck

I like Tristan Beck, but he just wasn’t great for the Giants in 2026 with a 5.21 ERA. He hasn’t found a permanent role in the last few seasons so it’s time to move on.

Brett Harris

Our own Nathan Hirschi wrote about Brett Harris today and how he didn’t do much in his September audition which is why he will be a pretty obvious cut candidate.

Duncan Davitt

We’ve written several articles about Duncan Davitt, AKA Double D (I just made that nickname up for him), including one from Harry Barker-Fost about his secondary career as a high school sports reporter. He may have to lean on that experience in the offseason with the lockout if it goes on for a while and he seems like a definite cut candidate after his last outing with San Francisco went poorly.

Joel Kuhnel

The Giants thought that they might get something decent when they scooped up Joel Kuhnel and while his high-velocity sinker was impressive, he struck out six and walked six in 9 and 2/3 innings of work so he will likely be cut.

Reiver Sanmartin

The Giants leaned upon Reiver Sanmartin quite a bit towards the end of the season as one of their few lefty options in the bullpen. He did okay but they should probably look into a left-handed reliever like JoJo Romero in free agency and Sanmartin will likely be a roster casualty.

Seth Lonsway

Lonsway had just a couple of appearances this season and they didn’t go great. He will certainly be out on waivers.

Joel Peguero

He showed promise in 2025, but unfortunately Peguero’s hamstring did not cooperate in 2026. He will likely be cut but maybe like Matt Gage he will clear waivers and go to Triple-A.

Shay Whitcomb

He played a lot in the last month of the season due to injuries and while he had some cool moments the Giants have enough infielders as it is.

Zach Morgan

It’s pretty silly that the Giants never got Zach Morgan into a game last season even though he’s a Stockton native but now he’s a pretty obvious cut candidate although there’s a chance he will remain in the organization in the minors.

There’s 10 names, but it’s also important to remember that if the Giants sign free agents, which I would strong advise them to do in hopes they will improve the roster at least a little bit, they will have to clear spots on the 40-man roster. That means others would have to be cut. Not to mention if they decide to protect some players from the Rule 5 Draft if they think there will even be one with the looming lockout.

This exercise just shows that some tough decisions are going to have to be made so expect a lot of roster activity in November for the Giants.
