The deadline for teams to get their 40-man rosters in place is finally here. For the SF Giants, it means that they will have one of the busiest days, with no fewer than 9 roster moves that need to be made.
The 60-day injured list disappears in the offseason, so teams need to activate players from that injured list within five days of the World Series ending.
The Giants have had a looming roster crunch for months. By the end of the year, they needed coverage up and down the roster, so if any player had an injury that would keep them out for more than a couple of weeks, they were likely placed on the 60-day injured list.
The Giants have a lot of decisions to make, but they do not necessarily have many tough decisions. The 40-man roster has enough soft spots that they can trim at least 10 roster spots with relative ease.
The SF Giants will have one of their busiest days in recent memory
That process began last week, headlined by Grant McCray being claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners. The Giants also lost Braxton Roxby in a waiver claim to the Washington Nationals. On Sunday night, the Giants made another move with the Nationals, trading Nate Furman in exchange for left-handed pitcher Tony Neubeck.
Matt Gage, Andrew Knizner, Jason Foley, and Osleivis Basabe all cleared waivers and were sent outright to Sacramento. They will all have a chance to reject a minor league assignment in favor of free agency. In fact, that is the likely outcome for all four players.
The 40-man roster currently stands at 33. The Giants have 16 players still listed on the 60-day injured list. All of them will need to be activated or placed on waivers. They do not have any strong candidates on the 60-day injured list to be placed on waivers.
That said, Carson Whisenhunt, Trevor McDonald, and Blade Tidwell will all be recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2027. The front office will at least need to consider whether it makes sense to carry all three injured players on the roster this offseason.
The Giants also have seven players (including Rowan Wick) still eligible for arbitration. The non-tender deadline is not until the end of November, but if the Giants do not plan on keeping any of those players, then their roster spots are vulnerable. Ryan Walker and José Buttó are arguably two of the most vulnerable players from that group.
The pitching side of the 40-man roster will see the most turnover. Newer additions, such as Duncan Davitt and Joel Kuhnel, along with more veteran additions, like Tristan Beck, are likely to be impacted by the roster crunch.
There might even be a trade or two later today. The deadline for the Giants to make all of their moves is 2 PM. If the Giants operate as they have in the past, then they will wait until the last minute to announce these moves.
