Expect a lot more of this.

The SF Giants' 40-man roster crunch is likely going to come to a head on Monday as they need to get things in order. The team has already been active removing guys from the 40-man roster to make room for all of the guys currently on the 60-day IL who will have to be reinstated for the offseason and they made another move on Sunday night by trading Nate Furman to the Washington Nationals in exchange for 23-year-old left-handed pitcher Tony Neubeck.

Neubeck went undrafted and Washington signed him as a free agent. He pitched six innings for their Single-A affiliate and had eight strikeouts compared to just one walk so maybe they have a nice diamond in the rough. He had a 3.95 ERA at Indiana in 2026 across 14 starts.

San Francisco has had some success with undrafted players like Bo Davidson, Turner Hill, and Trent Harris so maybe they are drawn to these undrafted guys.

Nate Furman has promise but did not make the cut for Giants

As for Furman, he seemed like a really nice addition when he was the "player to be named later" in San Francisco's trade in 2024 with the Cleveland Guardians that sent Alex Cobb to Cleveland. Furman hit really impressively in the minors and worked his way up pretty quickly but didn't do a whole lot when he got called up to the big leagues this season.

Just because Furman is gone does not mean the Cobb trade was a waste. Furman was the bonus while left-handed pitcher Jacob Bresnahan was the crown jewel of that deal and has lived up to the billing thus far.

Furman hit .125/.243/.125 in 39 plate appearances and while the Giants probably would have liked to hold onto him if they could, their infield is already pretty full as it is and they need to trim down the 40-man roster pretty quickly so he just did not make the cut for San Francisco.

He won't be the last man gone as the Giants will probably have to remove at least nine more players from the 40-man roster. I made my guess on who wouldn't make the cut and some of these guys may remain with the organization in the minors while others will be traded or get claimed by other teams so expect a lot of activity on Monday as the Giants try to get their roster in order at the start of the offseason.
