SF Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey has made it very clear that a key offseason goal for the team is to add pitching depth. There are many options out there to do that, so let's look at how Posey can give the pitching staff a facelift.
If San Francisco chooses to go the free agent route, there are plenty of starting pitchers and relievers who could potentially help the team out in a big way. The Giants have also been connected to some names via the trade market who could boost the team.
Pitchers SF Giants can target to add depth
The starting rotation for the Giants next year will consist of Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Landen Roupp assuming all three are healthy. Beyond that the Giants are going to have to make some additions.
Some of the bigger starting pitchers out there are Dylan Cease, Ranger Suárez, and Framber Valdez. All of them will likely command fairly lucrative multi-year deals so there will be risk involved with all of them being on the wrong side of 30.
But the Giants may have no choice but to add one of them given how depleted the rotation was by the end of the season.
They could also opt to make a trade for someone like Sonny Gray who has been connected to the Giants. Gray has expressed an openness to waive his no-trade clause so that could open the door to a deal that would bring him to San Francisco.
There are more mid-tier free agent options out there like Zac Gallen who the Giants could poach from Arizona, or they could reunite with Zack Littell or add Giants killer Merrill Kelly. They could also make a push to bring back Justin Verlander after a superb finish to the 2025 season.
Turning to the bullpen, the Giants are going to have to add some arms after how bad things got by the end of the season. The team sold off key arms at the deadline and lost other relievers to injury so their bullpen is in a weird place right now.
They could sign a big free agent coming off a bad year like Devin Williams or Ryan Helsley or maybe even sign a veteran closer like long-time Dodger Kenley Jansen to a one-year deal to provide some stability.
Why not a reunion with one, or both, of the Rogers twins? Both Taylor and Tyler are free agents and a reunion with Tyler would make a ton of sense with how consistent he has been in his career.
Maybe if the Giants are feeling especially nostalgic they could trade for Camilo Doval after he had a rough stint with the New York Yankees which may make the Yankees want to get rid of him.
These are just some potential options for the Giants to add depth to their pitching staff. Realistically, the Giants should probably be looking to add two legit starters to their rotation and maybe three solid bullpen arms. Those acquisitions may not all pan out perfectly, but the Giants need more arms.
Pitching is a top priority for the Giants this offseason so Buster is going to be busy as he tries to ensure the Giants have adequate depth going into 2026.
