The SF Giants are facing off against the Arizona Diamondbacks as both teams try to snag the final NL Wild Card spot. Zac Gallen will take the ball for Arizona in Tuesday night's contest and the pitcher would be a great target for the Giants in the offseason.
Gallen is a former All-Star who is struggling through what has been a rough season by his usual standards. He has an 11-13 record with a 4.77 ERA on the year in 29 starts and 168 innings pitched.
SF Giants could poach Zac Gallen from the Diamondbacks this offseason
The 30-year-old has likely cost himself some money when he becomes a free agent this offseason. He has been identified as Arizona's biggest free agent so it will be interesting to see if the Diamondbacks make a push to retain him or if he will find a new home.
The Diamondbacks already spent big money on free agent pitcher Corbin Burnes last offseason. Burnes went down due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery so they may be reticent to dole out another big contract if that is what Gallen's market becomes.
Even though Gallen's overall numbers are not pretty, he has been pitching much better as of late. Since the start of August his ERA is 2.20 so prospective teams may be encouraged by that in free agency.
The Giants would make sense as a destination for Gallen in free agency. They need to pad out their rotation going into 2026. Logan Webb and Robbie Ray are a solid one-two punch atop the rotation with Landen Roupp likely to have a spot as long as he is healthy. That still leaves two open spots that are up for grabs.
Justin Verlander could return for the Giants but he seems likely to depart in free agency. There are other potential options in free agency and then there is the trade route which the Giants may pursue according to some recent rumors.
Gallen could be a perfect fit for the Giants. They need a proven starter and he is a guy who has spent a lot of time in the National League West and has a familiarity with the ballparks and opposing teams.
With him in the mix the Giants could feel good about a rotation with Webb, Ray, Gallen, and Roupp in it with that fifth spot being an open competition for one of the young starters like Carson Whisenhunt or Carson Seymour.
The Giants will obviously hope they can rough Gallen up tonight, but he could easily be wearing orange and black next season.
