Maybe the Giants can acquire the guy who just shut them down.

The SF Giants got beaten by Sonny Gray and the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. A recent rumor has connected the Giants to Gray this offseason which makes sense as the team will be looking to land a starter or two.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that the Giants will have interest in Gray this offseason. Apparently he is "on the Giants' radar" and "very much a potential target" for San Francisco. The 35-year-old and three-time All-Star has a 13-8 record on the year with a 4.45 ERA in 29 starts and 163 and 2/3 innings pitched for St. Louis.

Those numbers are not as impressive as some of the ones he has put up in past seasons, but Gray is still a proven veteran starter who would do a lot to solidify San Francisco’s starting rotation if the team could land him.

Despite the overall numbers, he looked great on Sunday against the Giants. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing some runs but on the day he went 5 and 1/3 innings while allowing three earned runs on two hits and three walks.

Gray still has a couple more years on his contract. He is set to make $35 million in 2026 and then there is a club option of $30 million for the 2027 season. That means the Giants would have to swing a trade for Gray to land him.

There could be mutual interest in a deal, though. St. Louis has had a middling season and has seen decreased attendance at Busch Stadium. They may be looking to save money and getting rid of Gray is a way to do that.

The Giants are in need of a starter and Gray would make for a formidable first three members of the rotation alongside Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. The Giants could look at free agent options but the market can be a crapshoot.

Plus, Gray is familiar with manager Bob Melvin from their time together in Oakland. That familiarity could be a big plus for Gray and could help bring the best out of him at this stage in his career.

This is just a rumor, and it is not the first time Gray has been connected to San Francisco, but do not be surprised if there are more connections made between Gray and the Giants this offseason.
