Buster Posey can’t take his foot off the gas after SF Giants trade Luis Arraez to Phillies

For a little bit, it seemed like SF Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey might have lost his phone since the team had been fairly quiet ahead of Monday’s trade deadline.

Yet, they dealt Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves last night and now this morning the Giants have reportedly sent second baseman Luis Arraez and right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for right-handed pitcher Ramon Marquez and reliever Marty Gair.

It seems like a solid trade for San Francisco on the surface as they are getting two intriguing young pitchers and they are offloading a guy who they really had to trade given the fact he’s going to be a free agent after the season.

Still, this obviously cannot be the only trade Posey and the Giants make today. Robbie Ray is still an obvious trade chip and the Giants already have a blueprint for what they can get for him in a deal. It may not be a massive package but there are still teams that need pitching so they can take advantage of their desperation as it gets closer to the 3 PM PST trade deadline.

But the Giants probably shouldn’t stop there. Even if they are planning to hold onto Jung Hoo Lee and Logan Webb and even if it will be difficult to offload the large contracts of Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Rafael Devers, there are still plenty of guys who should be dealt.

Heliot Ramos should be an interesting option for a lot of teams that are in need of a right-handed bat. Even though Ramos is a former All-Star the Giants have some really intriguing outfield options knocking on the door so now may be the time to trade him.

He’s under team control beyond this year which means San Francisco should at least get two or three different prospects for him.

They cannot stop there, though. They have several relievers who are going to be free agents after this year like JT Brubaker and Sam Hentges who really shouldn’t be on the roster the rest of this year when it seems quite likely they will just depart in free agency.

This is not a time for Posey to be timid or too precious with anyone. This has been a really bad season and the Giants have a chance to make some pretty big changes until the deadline and bring some players into the organization who could be contributors down the road. It’s time for Posey to be bold so he cannot take his foot off the gas at all after the Arraez trade.
