SF Giants Rumors: 2 surprise teams added to Luis Arraez trade talks

SF Giants second baseman Luis Arraez is an obvious trade chip and we’ve heard a lot of rumors about teams that are interested in him. The latest chatter has centered on American League East teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Tampa Bay Rays.

But some surprise teams have entered the discussions as Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies are two other teams in the mix as well.

Rumors are flying around like crazy right now with the August 3 trade deadline at 3 PM PST. Bob Nightengale wrote that the Rays are the favorite for Arraez which makes sense since they have a clear need at second base and it is Arraez’s preference to remain at second wherever he goes.

The Yankees are an imperfect fit since Jazz Chisholm Jr. is at second base and the Yankees probably don’t want to move him to third base. The Rangers could make room at second but their infield is also overflowing a bit and the same could be said about the Phillies. Bryson Stott is Philadelphia’s second baseman so it’s unclear where he’d go if the Giants trades Arraez to Philly. 

From San Francisco’s perspective, they probably don’t care that much what Areaez wants and instead want to get the best return possible. If the Phillies offer more than Tampa Bay then they’re going to make a deal with Philly in all likelihood.

Giants seem poised to strike a trade soon

The Giants have still yet to make a deal but it feels like something could happen soon. They kept Arraez out of the lineup Saturday night and they don’t want him to get hurt like Casey Schmitt did recently which would end trade talks immediately.

Robbie Ray could also be on the move soon after Tarik Skubal was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lots of teams need starting pitching so there's a good chance that Ray will get the Giants a decent return ahead of the deadline.

We could see a lot of Giants in new uniforms in the coming days. I predicted six Giants will be traded but we’ll have to see what the front office decides to do.

Arraez is the most obvious trade chip of all though so it will be fascinating to see where he goes and whether any other new teams throw their hat in the ring.
