Casey Schmitt injury teaches Buster Posey, SF Giants important trade deadline lesson

The SF Giants got some tough news on third baseman Casey Schmitt. The breakout utility man suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee which will likely shut him down for the rest of this season. This injury teaches Buster Posey and San Francisco’s front office an important lesson about the trade deadline. 

Schmitt was not super likely to be traded, but his name was coming up in trade chatter and opposing teams were sending scouts to watch him for a reason. Given the barren market when it comes to right-handed hitters, you can bet teams were intrigued by a guy with 21 home runs who can play all over the diamond.

Now the Giants probably don’t even have the choice to trade Schmitt. They technically could if they wanted to sell high on a guy who is not going to be a free agent for several more years. That would be pretty cold-hearted though so soon after a season-ending injury.

This is a lesson for Posey, though. While injuries are unpredictable, imagine if something like this happened to Luis Arraez or Robbie Ray? The Giants would likely be stuck with them and wouldn’t get anything for the pending free agent.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Schmitt’s injury spurred some action from San Francisco. Maybe they don’t wait until August 3 to start making deals and instead we see some action in the coming days.

This is a pivotal deadline for Posey and Giants

It’s been a bad season for San Francisco but the way they can salvage it is by having a good trade deadline. Posey was not afraid to be aggressive last year at the deadline and the team got some nice young players out of those deals so fans will be expecting a repeat of that effort.

Posey's best bet to turn things around is to continue to load up the farm system with promising young talent. Many analysts think the team had a good 2026 MLB Draft so maybe they can keep that momentum going.

Expect not just Ray and Arraez to be gone, but outfielder Heliot Ramos also feels very likely to be moved as well and it wouldn't be surprising if the Giants did not stop there. It will be sad to see some of these guys go but the Giants have to be smart and if there are moves on the table that will help the franchise in the future then they have to make them, ideally sooner rather than later as the Schmitt injury shows.
