Reds' Spencer Steer injury means asking price on 2 SF Giants trade chips just went up

Looking around MLB this next week, everything will be under a microscope as contenders look to buy and sellers look to offload ahead of the August 3 trade deadline. Every injury has ramifications for other teams which is why SF Giants fans should care that a player on the Cincinnati Reds is hurt.

Spencer Steer, one of the premier right-handed hitting trade chips on the market, injured his right wrist and is now on the IL. That makes it unlikely, but not impossible, that a team will trade for him in the next week which could make them turn to other options.

That puts the Giants in a great spot since they have Casey Schmitt and Heliot Ramos, two guys who were already thought of as trade chips but could fetch even more in a deal after this news since there is likely one less right-handed bat on the trade block.

Steer is similar to Schmitt in that he can play pretty much anywhere on the diamond. He’s played every position except pitcher, catcher, and shortstop this year so for teams in need of a right-handed utility guy, Schmitt now becomes the most obvious guy to pivot to.

There should be a number of teams looking for a right-handed bat at the trade deadline. The options are fairly limited since there aren’t many teams that are obviously going to be sellers which puts the Giants at an advantage.

Giants could get risky by trading Schmitt and Ramos

Everyone knows they are going to sell but it’s really up to them how far they want to go. Do they want to play it safe and only get rid of pending free agents like Luis Arraez, Robbie Ray, and Tyler Mahle? Or do they want to take a risk and trade guys who are under team control for several more years like Schmitt or Ramos?  

It will really come down to what they can get in return. Maybe the Steer injury leads to a team offering one more prospect for one of them that makes it tough for San Francisco to say no. Every single development has ramifications this time of year so it’s important to keep an eye on the IL.

The Giants are in a position to get some good returns for players in the next week so if they want to sell hard, the Steer injury is only going to make it easier for them to trade some players who could get them the best return in a deal.
