3 more deals SF Giants can make with Braves after Tyler Mahle trade

The SF Giants broke their trade deadline silence by dealing starting pitcher Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Anthony Molina. This may not be the only deal the two teams make ahead of Monday’s trade deadline which would be fitting given how many former Giants are already on the Braves.

It makes sense for the Giants to get something for Mahle. He’s set to be a free agent after the year and has been pitching better as of late so he will add some depth to Atlanta’s rotation.

But the Braves are leading in the National League East and if they want to make a run in the playoffs it’s going to take more than just Mahle. Let’s look at three more deals the Braves and Giants could make ahead of the deadline.

Giants may not be done making trades with Braves after Tyler Mahle

Robbie Ray

Left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray remains with the Giants for now. If Atlanta really wanted to beef up its rotation though Ray would be a great option.

He’s been pitching really well as of late and Atlanta already has one of the best left-handed starters in the game in Chris Sale so if they added Ray that would be a pretty good one-two combo.

The return for Ray may not be as much as the Giants would like based on other deals but he’d still make sense for Atlanta. Maybe the Giants could get pitchers Blake Burkhalter and Ethan Bagwell.

Willy Adames

The Braves could still use a shortstop. They’ve cycled through Ha-Seong Kim, Jorge Mateo, and Mauricio Dubon but Adames would at least be a permanent option for them at short.

It would be a tough trade to pull off given Adames’ contract. The Giants would have to take on a lot of money probably and the Braves have to have concerns about Adames’ offensive and defensive decline this year as well as the back injury he’s dealing with.

Still, if the Braves feel like they need a shortstop maybe they’d be willing to do business again with San Francisco. Perhaps the Giants could try for a package that includes outfielder Diego Tornes.

Erik Miller

The Braves are also reportedly in the market for bullpen help. While San Francisco’s bullpen has struggled this season, lefty Erik Miller has come on strong as of late and has a 2.78 ERA on the year.

He’s under team control beyond this year so there’s a case to be made for keeping him but maybe the Giants could squeeze two prospects rather than one out of Atlanta for him. How about a deal that includes lefty pitcher Landon Beidelschies?

Mahle may be the first deal the Giants made ahead of the deadline but he certainly won’t be their last and there’s a decent chance he won’t be the last one they make with Atlanta as well.
