Phillies would be silly not to take advantage of underrated SF Giants trade chip

Everyone is thinking about Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray when considering SF Giants trade chips. Yet, one of the more underrated chips the Giants have is right-handed starter Tyler Mahle. He's not the sexiest of trade candidates but he could still get San Francisco a decent return.

He is set to be a free agent after this season and the Giants would be wise to get something for him so they can also clear a spot in the rotation for a young arm like Blade Tidwell. The Giants would be wise to create opportunities for their young players for the rest of what has been a very disappointing season.

Mahle’s overall numbers aren’t that pretty. He has a 5.13 ERA on the season but he’s been better as of late. He has a 3.79 ERA in his last seven starts and has looked pretty good since returning from the IL. He's not a guy a team would want to start a playoff game but he isn't a bad option for a team in need of an arm.

Teams that could really use a backend starter could have a fair amount of interest in a guy like Mahle and that’s where the Philadelphia Phillies come into play.

Giants need to take advantage of Phillies need with Tyler Mahle

Recent reporting suggests the Phillies are looking to shore up the back end of their rotation. They’re in the thick of the NL playoff picture so any small improvement they make could improve their playoff odds. 

The nice thing is that Mahle won’t cost a ton. The Giants could be nice and pay off the rest of whatever he’s owed from his $10 million salary which could get them a better player in a deal. 

One Phillies pitcher I’ve had circled for a while is right-hander Alex McFarlane. He’s 25 and just got called up to the big league roster where he’s had one scoreless outing. In Double-A this season he had a 2.06 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 35 innings of work.

Gabe Craig could be another prospect they target. He’s a reliever with a 2.83 ERA in the minors and seven saves. The Giants need to build up their bullpen and trading Mahle is a good way to do it.

Mahle isn’t the shiniest trade chip but he would be a practical addition for a team that needs some pitching but doesn’t want to pay a crazy price. The Giants and Phillies would be wise to team up on this one.
