SF Giants rookie Bruce Eldridge had his first huge moment in a Giants uniform on Wednesday as he hit an amazing walk-off grand slam to beat the Washington Nationals and complete a massive comeback.
After the game, Eldridge was asked if he was thinking about hitting a home run in that spot and he gave a cold-blooded answer in reply: “Yeah, honestly.”
It’s only natural for him to think that way. The Giants were down by three and the bases were loaded. It’s that dream scenario every kid thinks about with the game on the line.
Eldridge barely got the ball over the wall and even if it didn’t have enough to get out it would have either clanked off the wall and scored a few runs or if a huge gust of wind hit it then at least it would’ve scored the runner from third on a sacrifice fly. A home run wasn't necessary in that spot but it sure was the coolest option available.

Eldridge shows he's not afraid of the big moment
But Eldridge’s incredibly honest response speaks to his mindset as a very confident 21-year-old player. Just remember back a little over a month ago when he said that he was “feeling sexy at the plate” after he got called up. 30 years ago that would have led to a pitcher buzzing the tower on the 6-foot-7 slugger but in today’s game no one really bats at eye.
Still, that declaration seemed a bit silly and premature when he wasn’t even hitting .200 his first few weeks with the team but ever since he’s gotten consistent everyday playing time he’s been tearing the cover off the ball.
Eldridge is now hitting .298/.385/.521 with four home runs and 12 runs batted in. He’s inserted himself into National League Rookie of the Year chatter and now has the attention of MLB at large.
While some of what Eldridge says could come off as brash or cocky, he is still humble as evidenced by the fact that he got a little emotional when told that he was the youngest player in MLB history to hit a walk-off grand slam.
He’s just a very confident guy who has not hidden the fact that he wants to be the face of the franchise. That’s a lot to aspire to but early indications are that he is more than up for the challenge and is not afraid to be “the guy” for the Giants going forward.
