The SF Giants continue to be bad. They went down quietly on Wednesday to the San Diego Padres 5-1 and while the desperate attempt to infuse some life into the team by calling up Bryce Eldridge and Jesus Rodriguez earlier this week resulted in a win on Monday night, they lost the last two games of the series. Not only that, but Eldridge’s comment about “feeling sexy at the plate” looks laughable after how he performed in the series.
He does not deserve all of the blame by any stretch. The guys getting paid over $100 million who seemingly don’t know how to hit deserve most of the blame, but Eldridge did record just one hit on a weak single in nine at-bats during the series and walked once while striking out four times including three times on Wednesday. He might have felt sexy but he sure didn’t look it.
Padres had a plan to shut down Eldridge and executed it
The Padres definitely seemed to have a plan to attack him inside. Eldridge broke multiple bats during the series trying to catching up to fastballs inside so San Diego was smart to prevent his long arms from getting extended.
It’s just one series and the Giants should not make any knee-jerk reactions by sending him down or putting him on the bench. With the way this season is going they may as well just play him a lot to try to get him used to big league pitching.
Still, to get called up and one of the first public things you say is that you’re feeling sexy at the plate and then to back it up with a bad series like that is a bit embarrassing. The 21-year-old is certainly not lacking in confidence but there are some things that are just better left unsaid especially when getting called up to a struggling team.
It’s okay to have that internal, quiet confidence. That’s the way the Giants conducted themselves when Buster Posey was still playing and was a leader on the team. When Posey, Brandon Crawford, Hunter Pence, and Brandon Belt were on the team you wouldn’t have heard anyone in the clubhouse saying they felt sexy unless it was Belt cracking a joke to reporters or Brian Wilson donning his unique persona.
There’s arguably nothing less sexy than a baseball team that is now 14-23 on the season with no real hope of getting things turned around. Posey already spent his hope card by calling up Eldridge, a move that he certainly didn’t want to do this early, and things still feel utterly hopeless.
Maybe it’s just one of those years and everything is going to go against the Giants. That’s what happened in 2017 seemingly out of nowhere so Giants fans know what it looks like.
Let’s just hope Eldridge saves the cockiness until he actually starts to show some aptitude at the big league level because he currently has just four hits in 37 big league at-bats.
