San Francisco Giants Hot Stove: Latest on Closer, Cespedes and More

The San Francisco Giants are already being linked to several big time free agents this winter. The Hot Stove is just beginning and already the team has reportedly met with representatives for closer Aroldis Chapman.

Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports is reporting that San Francisco is in on New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Heyman is also reporting that the Giants and Boston Red Sox are the teams most interested in former Kansas City Royals closer Greg Holland.

According to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, the team has also met with representatives for closers Kenley Jansen and Mark Melancon.

As Richard Justice of MLB.com reports, closers are all the rage now more than ever after the performances of Andrew Miller, Chapman and Jansen, among others.

As far as the outfield goes, Around the Foghorn wrote about why he would be a good fit for the San Francisco Giants last week. Of course, we also wrote about why Cespedes and others might not be worth pursuing this winter. There is always risk in free agency and there are always people on both sides of the argument for who should be brought in and who would be the best fit.

It is likely the Giants will be linked to every available closer and outfielder throughout the winter. One benefit to being a playoff team is there needs are smaller than most teams. San Francisco is not the best home field for hitters, but they may be able to persuade a closer to agree to play their home games at AT&T Park.

An outfielder on the trade market is J.D. Martinez of the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are considering an overhaul and a complete rebuild and Martinez is the most likely candidate to be traded with only one year left on his contract.

Another player the team has been linked to is the Los Angeles Dodgers Justin Turner. Turner, who played mostly third base for the Dodgers, can play multiple positions and could be an option in LF. He may also be asked to play third if he was signed and the team could move Eduardo Nunez back to a utility role. Nunez may even be an option at that point in left field.

Such is the entertainment of Hot Stove news. Every player seems to be linked to every team before the winter finally ends.
