Young SF Giants outfielder Drew Gilbert has proven to be an odd bird. He being a unique, goofy, some could even say freaky, energy to the team and he even has his own hype video courtesy of MLB’s social media.

SF Giants outfielder Drew Gilbert christens himself with new nickname
In the video, Gilbert is asked if he has any nicknames for himself and he says “Chilly Goo Bear.” It is not altogether clear what that means, but it definitely makes sense for an eccentric fellow like Gilbert.
We know his involvement in a strange team ritual that may have had something to do with the team’s recent success and he has gone viral on social media with his insane reaction shots to other players hitting home runs.
As Gilbert has gotten more comfortable at the big league level it is clear that he has been willing to show more and more of his personality. This is in stark contrast to other eras of the game when rookies felt like they had to know their place and not do anything to draw attention to themselves.
Gilbert is coming into his own as a player which allows him to get away with being a bit goofy. In 22 games he is slashing .263/.283/.526 with three home runs and 12 runs batted in. He is also showing off his defense in the outfield as well as his speed. In Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals he made a circus catch near the seats and in his first career MLB game he made an unorthodox web gem.
His play, along with the hot streak of Luis Matos, definitely could shake up Buster Posey’s offseason plans. While right field seemed like an obvious position to upgrade, maybe with how Gilbert and Matos has looked Posey will decide to roll with them next season.
The “Chilly Goo Bear” has definitely helped the team out during the recent hot streak. San Francisco is going to need him to keep contributing since they are going to need to play nearly flawlessly coming down the stretch if they want to snag a spot in the playoffs this season.
