Yet another former SF Giants player has joined the Los Angeles Angels

It seems like the Los Angeles Angels are targeting former Giants at this point.

The Los Angeles Angels have made a habit of signing former SF Giants players to their team. We can add yet another former Giant to this list after infielder J.D. Davis signed a minor league contract with the team with an invite to spring training.

This news came via Robert Murray of FanSided who posted it on the social media platform X:

Angels add yet another former SF Giants player

Davis was a Giant from 2022 to 2023. Former president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi made a pretty shrewd move by trading Darin Ruf to the New York Mets for Davis in 2022. Davis, an Elk Grove native, played some solid ball for the Giants in 2022 and 2023. In 2022 with San Francisco he slashed .263/.361/.496 with eight home runs and 14 RBI in 49 games. He followed that up with a respectable 2023 in which he was the primary starting third baseman for the team, slashing .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs and 69 RBI.

When there was a lot of buzz surrounding Matt Chapman and the Giants prior to the 2024 season, there were some who believed that Chapman was not all that much better than Davis. Ultimately, the Giants were completely justified in moving on from Davis in favor of Chapman. This is not a knock on Davis because he is a fine ballplayer, but Chapman just brought so much more to the table with his defense and with how well he performed at the plate in 2024.

Davis struggled in 2024, spending time with the A's and the New York Yankees. He slashed a disappointing .218/.293/.338 with four home runs and six RBI in 46 games on the season. Perhaps he can have a hot spring and turn things around with the Angels.

Last year, our own Jeff Young took a look at all of the former Giants who were on the Angels in 2024. This list included players like Matt Moore, Kevin Pillar, Hunter Strickland, and Ehire Adrianza who recently got a new front office job after retiring. The Angels also swung a trade for Jorge Soler earlier this offseason. Perhaps the Minasian brother connection is part of this Giants-to-Angels pipeline. Perry Minasian has been the general manager for the Angels for a while now and his brother Zack was a longtime member of the Giants front office before he was promoted to general manager earlier this offseason.

We will have to see if any other former Giants find their way onto the Angels going forward.
