The SF Giants got swept by the Boston Red Sox over the weekend and to add injury to insult, it seems they lost two more players after the roster has already been decimated by injury.
Shortstop Willy Adames had to leave Sunday’s game due to an elbow injury after an awkward slide into home. He’s already been dealing with a back injury so the Giants really should just shut him down the rest of this season. We know he likes to play and that’s admirable, but the team has too much money invested in him to keep running him out there when he’s hurt.
Outfielder Victor Bericoto had to leave on Sunday due to a knee injury. While it may not be as serious as initially feared, he should probably spend some time on the IL. There’s no need for force guys to play through injuries in this dreadful season.
This is a season that is now solely meant to help the team’s future. That’s why the Giants need to make two obvious call-ups from Triple-A Sacramento after these latest injuries.
2 guys the Giants should call up after more injury woes
Bo Davidson
He’s been knocking on the door for a while now, and eventually it feels like outfielder Bo Davidson is going to just kick it down. Davidson has been on a heater with Sacramento and is hitting .286/.356/.521 with 25 home runs and 80 runs batted in this season in the minors.
We’ve covered here before how there are complications in calling prospects up to the big league roster with a lockout looming, but at this point the Giants might as well give Davidson a look for a month in the outfield even if it means he won’t be able to play in minor league games next year during a lockout.
Nate Furman
It was a bit of a surprise that the Giants decided to send down Nate Furman recently after he had only eight plate appearances. He’s a solid, contact-first infielder who should be called up and put at second base.
Ever since he was sent back down he’s been hot, recording at least one hit in every game as he’s not hitting .293/.377/.414 on the year with seven homers and 48 runs batted in. He’s also drawn 52 walks compared to 55 strikeouts.
He certainly deserves playing time over Buddy Kennedy and the Giants could move Osleivis Basabe to shortstop to accommodate Furman at second.
If Marcelo Mayer was healthy he’d probably get called up but he had an injury setback during his rehab assignment so Furman is the best option.
It’s unfortunate the Giants have been so banged up this year, but at least it’s creating opportunities for young guys. Adames and Bericoto should be put on the IL and Davidson and Furman should be called up right away.
