The SF Giants are giving a lot of their young outfielders a chance to prove themselves right now with Harrison Bader recovering from his scooter snafu and Heliot Ramos being traded to the New York Yankees. One outfielder in Triple-A may force his way up to the big leagues as well soon.
Bo Davidson is one of San Francisco’s top prospects and he just hit an absolute moonshot for the Sacramento River Cats. It was a bomb that slammed off the batter’s eye in straightaway center field which an incredibly impressive swing of the bat.

Davidson hit another big homer on Friday night so it seems his heater is not ending anytime soon. He’s displayed his power all year in the minors. Between Double-A and Triple-A he’s hitting .288/.355/.525 with 24 home runs and 77 runs batted in. Davidson has 18 stolen bases in 20 attempts and it's notable that his numbers improved after he got promoted from Richmond to Sacramento.
Those numbers absolutely seem strong enough to warrant a call-up, but one complication may be the looming lockout. If Davidson is added to the 40-man roster that means he would not be able to play in minor league games that take place during the lockout next year.
That forces the Giants to make a tough decision on whether getting some big league exposure for a month or so is more valuable than getting minor league reps next year. No one knows for sure how long the lockout may last so a team is taking a risk by calling up players right now.
Giants might decide to throw Bo Davidson into mix of young outfielders
Davidson would make sense as an option in the outfield, though. Drew Gilbert and Jonah Cox are splitting time in center field and in left the Giants are currently going with Victor Bericoto and Turner Hill.
Cox has really struggled as of late so maybe the Giants could send him down to get more work in the minors or they could get rid of Buddy Kennedy and roll with six outfielders on the roster but at this point in the season why not get a little bit weird?
Davidson is one of the more intriguing prospects in the organization and the fact that he went undrafted, just like Turner Hill, makes his ascension all the more impressive. While there’s risk involved, there’s a case to be made that he deserves a look so if he keeps swinging a hot bat then he may get called up soon.
