Looming MLB lockout may rob SF Giants prospects of their big league debut

One of the few things SF Giants fans have to look forward to the rest of the season is seeing the young guys play. If they can get some experience then maybe something valuable can come from this dreadful season, but the Giants might not call up some of their young prospects before the end of the season due to the looming MLB lockout.

When there is a lockout, that means that teams are unable to contact players who are on the 40-man roster and those players are not eligible to play in any games. That’s why the Giants, and pretty much every MLB team, may decide not to call guys up late in the year like they usually would to get them a taste of the big leagues.

That means players like Parks Harber or Turner Hill probably won’t get called up to the big leagues this year even though their numbers in the minors would certainly warrant a promotion to the big leagues especially since the Giants have a lot of spots up for grabs after the trade deadline.

Harber in particular would be fun to see in the big leagues. In the minors this year he’s hit .297/.381/.522 with 17 home runs and 68 runs batted in. He can play third base or one of the corner outfield spots which is where the Giants need the most help right now.

This just shows how the lockout really impacts everything. It’s impacting prospects and their development although keeping them off the 40-man roster may be better for their development in the long run because they’d be able to play in minor league games next year even during a lockout.

Giants are set to get some young players back soon

The Giants will still get a look at some young players who are on the 40-man roster, though. Victor Bericoto and Jonah Cox are both on rehab assignments right now and should be back with the big league club soon. Jesus Rodriguez could come back at some point this year and the recently acquired Marcelo Mayer is set to begin a rehab assignment.

All of those guys could end up playing an important role for the Giants in the future. Bericoto has a chance to be the left fielder of the future after the Heliot Ramos trade. Cox could be the center fielder of the future after Harrison Bader’s shenanigans. Rodriguez could factor into the catcher contingent and can also play other spots around the diamond.

So at least those players will get opportunities, it’s just a shame that some guys who are probably deserving of making their big league debut won’t get that chance this year as teams prepare for the lockout which some think will last a very long time.
