6 SF Giants who have 6 weeks to prove they belong in team’s 2027 plans

The SF Giants are limping to the finish line this season and the most interesting thing to watch on the win-loss total is whether they can avoid losing 100 games. They have to go at least 14-31 over the next 45 games to have a record of 63-99 so this thing could end up coming down to the wire.

Whats arguably more important than that though is how a crop of younger players fare the rest of the way. They have a great chance to prove themselves and show that they should have a place on the 2027 team.

Let’s take a look at six players who need to take advantage of the audition they have in front of them these next six weeks if they want to snag a spot on the big league roster next year.

6 Giants who have a lot to prove the rest of the season

Carson Whisenhunt

As things currently stand, the Giants’ rotation next year may end up being comprised of Logan Webb, Landen Roupp, Adrian Houser, and maybe one free-agent addition. My money is on Kevin Gausman.

The last spot in the rotation, maybe two depending on what they do with Houser, could very well end up going to one of their young starters. That’s why Carson Whisenhunt needs to turn things around if he wants to be in the mix for that spot.

His first few starts of the year were solid and he has pitched quite well in Triple-A, but after several rough starts in a row he has an ugly 7.25 ERA in five big league starts on the year.

There’s still time to turn things around and he’s going to stay in the rotation unless things get really ugly but the rest of this season will determine a lot for his future.

Blade Tidwell

Another young arm who will compete for a role next year is Blade Tidwell. He’s done quite well this season in his limited opportunities in the big leagues and his first start with the Giants was solid as he allowed two earned runs in five innings of work.

His history with manager Tony Vitello from their time at the University of Tennessee would make him a logical No. 5 starter next year if he performs well so he needs to build off his start in Texas.

Osleivis Basabe

The injuries to Matt Chapman and Casey Schmitt have really opened things up on the infield for San Francisco. Several guys can take advantage and Osleivis Basabe has been the most impressive of the bunch so far. He’s hitting .296/.310/.667 with three home runs and eight runs batted in so far. 

Yet, with the 2027 infield already pretty much set in stone barring injury, the best Basabe can do is snag a bench spot next year. That still matters though if guys get hurt and he will have some competition for that role.

Marcelo Mayer

While Mayer is injured right now, he’s set to start a rehab assignment soon and could be with the Giants in a week or two. While his stint with the Boston Red Sox didn’t work out all that well, he still has talent and if he proves he can hit in the final month or so of the season then he could be a presence on the 2027 team which could put some pressure on guys like shortstop Willy Adames.

Grant McCray

The tools have always been evident with Grant McCray. He’s fast as heck, a great defender, and has an absolute hose for a right arm. If he could hit at all then he’d probably have a case to be San Francisco’s starting center fielder next year with Harrison Bader’s scooter snafu.

Yet, he has just three hits in 30 at-bats this season. If he wants to make next year’s team then he needs to get hot at the plate.

Victor Bericoto

Bericoto is also on the IL but is on a rehab assignment and should be back with the club soon. The Heliot Ramos trade was a fairly big vote of confidence in Bericoto who impressed before injury struck.

He’s hitting .293/.305/.552 with four home runs and nine runs batted in so if he hits some more dingers when he’s healthy then the Giants will feel a lot better about that trade.

These aren’t the only guys with something to prove, but with a hot close to the season they could be talked about as guys who already have one hand on a roster spot going into 2027.
