Bo Davidson may not want to leave Las Vegas. The SF Giants outfield prospect clubbed four home runs against the Las Vegas Aviators on his way to earning Pacific Coast Player of the Week honors, per a team announcement.
The ball tends to jump in Las Vegas. The Colorado Rockies played the A's there earlier in the year, and set a franchise record by scoring 23 runs in a single game. This is a team that has played half of its games at Coors Field for nearly 30 years and has never reached that mark previously.
The Pacific Coast League (PCL) is known for its live stadiums, and Las Vegas Ballpark is among the liveliest. That may be what Davidson needed to get going.
The left-handed bat earned a promotion to Triple-A earlier in the year, but it has been a slow adjustment. He is not the first prospect to struggle at a new level, and he will not be the last.
SF Giants outfield prospect seemingly turned the corner after strong week
Heading into the six-game series against the Aviators, Davidson has a .536 OPS in 95 plate appearances with the Sacramento River Cats. He played a big role in helping them secure a series win and maintain a hold on first place in the PCL West Division.
In that series, the 24-year-old outfielder slashed .560/.607/.1.160 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 25 at-bats. This includes an outburst on Sunday night, where he tallied two home runs, including a grand slam, with eight RBI in five at-bats.
By the end of the series, Davidson had an .820 OPS in a River Cats uniform. He is still relatively new to the league, and the sample is small enough that things can change quickly. It definitely changed in a positive way for Davidson.
Overall, Davidson has an .850 OPS with 23 home runs and 75 RBI in 438 plate appearances split between two affiliates this season. His home run total is only one behind Lisbel Diaz for the lead among Giants minor leaguers.
Will the Giants see Davidson before the end of 2026? He is eligible for the Rule 5 draft in the offseason, and they will likely protect him by then. The looming lockout presents some uncertaintiy around the Rule 5 draft.
The deadline to protect players comes in late November, but the CBA expires in December. During the 2021-2022 lockout, the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft was skipped. That is a consideration teams will weigh when making these decisions. That said, there is no guarantee that this will happen this time around. If a player like Davidson needs to be protected, there is a good chance that a team will protect him, even if the potential lockout casts some doubt on the necessity to do so.
