The SF Giants provided an injury update on a trio of players. Lefty reliever Matt Gage could be nearing a return after starting a rehab assignment with the Sacramento River Cats.

1. Matt Gage begins rehab assignment

The return of Gage should be a boost to a bullpen that has slumped all season. He has been sidelined since the start of July with an elbow strain. At the time, it was feared that he would need season-ending elbow surgery.

However, Gage is nearing a return after some rest and recovery. This should be a lengthy rehab assignment, as he was transferred to the 60-day injured list at the start of August. The retroactive date is still his initial placement on the injured list, which was on July 4. Gage will be eligible to return in the first week of September.

The left-handed reliever allowed one earned run in one inning of work in a 15-11 loss to the Tacoma Rainiers on Saturday night. The velocity on all of his pitches was noticeably lower. He is not a power pitcher, but his fastball averaged just over 90 MPH, compared to a season average of 92 MPH. Gage has a 5.60 ERA in 34 outings this season.

2. Marcelo Mayer sidelined with bone bruise

The Giants hoped that Marcelo Mayer would be able to return soon, and that could still be on the table. According to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 23-year-old infielder is dealing with a bone bruise. The plan for him is to get rest and then re-evaluated.

Mayer had not appeared in a game with the River Cats since Tuesday. That could have been interpreted as a sign that his rehab assignment was done and that he was heading to the East Coast to join the Giants. However, that was not the case.

The left-handed hitter tallied six hits, including a home run, in 17 at-bats during a rehab stint with Sacramento. When the Giants acquired him, Buster Posey expressed hope that they would get an evaluation of Mayer before the end of the year.

3. Joel Peguero shut down for the season

Joel Peguero's season is officially over. Pavlovic also reported that the hard-throwing reliever continues to deal with a hamstring injury that has plagued him since spring training.

Peguero recently began a rehab assignment with Sacramento, but made two appearances and did not record an out. It is an unfortunate setback given how much the bullpen has struggled this year. There was a clear path for him to carve out a role for the next year's bullpen. He could still do that, but that will need to wait until 2027. Peguero posted a 2.38 ERA in 11 appearances for San Francisco in 2026.
