Why SF Giants fans should not be discouraged after rough series vs. Padres

The SF Giants went into their two-game series against the San Diego Padres riding high. They had a memorable walk-off win on Sunday and were atop the NL West standings, but the two losses in San Diego are not cause for alarm.

The team's offense sputtered a bit and unfortunately their starting pitching was not strong enough to overcome the lack of offense against the Padres. Yet, the way in which they lost tells us a lot about the Giants going forward.

While the Giants went down on both Tuesday and Wednesday, they at least made both games competitive when things could have gotten out of hand. The Giants were down 5-1 in the 5th inning of Tuesday's game but they fought back to make it a one-run deficit before San Diego was able to get a few more insurance runs.

Then, on Wednesday the Giants were down 3-0 going into the 6th inning with their only hit coming on a much-deserved bloop single from LaMonte Wade Jr. who had been hitting line drives right at people for the entire season.

San Francisco did not give up as they scored one run in the 6th, 7th, and 8th inning to make the score a two-run deficit. They came up short again despite getting the tying run up to the plate in the 9th inning, but they did not quit.

Refusing to quit has been a common theme to this team so far in 2025. They have had several comeback wins when down by two or more runs so they clearly do not believe they are out of any game which is a key belief to have early in a season.

While losing both games to the Padres stings because it felt like an important early test going up against a division foe that is also off to a strong start, it could be a necessary wake up call that gives the team a little more motivation.

Back in 2021, the Giants were 28-16 on May 20th and they got set to face the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time all season at Oracle Park. The Giants got swept in a three-game series and it had the same sort of feeling as these losses to the Padres: like the Giants had blown an early opportunity to set the tone against a rival.

Yet, we all know how that year ended as the Giants won 107 games and beat the Dodgers to win the NL West before umpire Gabe Morales took matters into his own hands in the NLDS between the two teams.

It is still early and losing two games to the Padres is never a fun thing, but the Giants still showed why they are a team to have faith in as the season goes on.
